Chapter Sixteen

Perfect Storm

AFTER SENDING A LAST text, Maddy turned off the phone and stuck it in the glovebox with a firm, “Everyone’s updated. Hunter and Bo said they have the day off tomorrow, so they volunteered to man up for any ongoing jobs you have just in case. I think that’s enough of that for now.” She turned to Ma. “How are you doing, Nellie?”

And then the two women chatted like lifelong friends while I thought about Ma.

And Maddy.

And the possibility of a life with her.

And Ma.

Not like she was a burden. Never that. But how much could I expect from Maddy in a situation like this?

A whole helluva lot I found out as soon as we got home.

She let me get as far as the door before swiveling on me. “You go pick up her prescription, and I’ll see to everything here.”

“Are you—”

She lifted my keys from me, unlocked the door, ushered Ma inside, and blew me a kiss.

Okay then.

I took a few minutes while waiting for the prescription to get filled, standing outside the pharmacy, smoking a cig. Trying to just be grateful Ma was okay. Trying not to think about motherfucking ass-ugly Hogg and the escalating amount of money I still owed him with time ticking down again.

I was back home in a jiffy, and when I walked in I heard Maddy and Ma’s voices from the living room. I shut the door quietly, inching closer to hear them. Just a little harmless eavesdropping.

“I wish you didn’t have to see me like that, Maddy dear. All banged up in the hospital. I’m not usually so clumsy.”

“Please, Nellie. It was nothing. We were both so worried about you.”

We. Maddy was worried, too. Something gripped my heart and held on tight.

“I wish Taylor didn’t have to do so much.” Ma’s voice trembled.

“He does it because he loves you. Don’t feel bad for one single second.”

Jesus. Could I love the woman more?

My voice was gruff when I walked into the room. “Hey, gal.” I leaned down to kiss Ma’s cheek. “They gave you the good stuff. I might take some later.” I shook the white paper bag while she giggled.

“Hi, sweetness.” I bent to kiss Maddy, too.

My lips lingered over hers, moving hot and soft.

When I lifted my head, Ma had her hand clapped over her mouth, her eyes dancing. Again, that could’ve been the drugs, but I got the feeling she definitely approved.

After I made sure she was comfy and settled in her chair with her favorite ugly blanket, I gave her one of the new pills and a glass of water. Moments later she slipped into a snooze on the rocker.

Felt like I could breathe for the first time in hours. I rubbed the back of my neck, muscles tight and tense.

Maddy watched. “Why don’t you just sit with her, and I’ll go figure something out for dinner?”

“You should go home.”

“Do you want me to?”

“No.”

“Neither do I.” She towed me to the couch and pushed me down. “Put your feet up and try not to worry for just a few minutes.
